What Is Reproductive Endocrinology?

A reproductive endocrinologist (REI) is an obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) specializing in the endocrine system — the body’s network of glands and organs that produce and release hormones that regulate various bodily functions. The endocrine system regulates metabolism, energy, growth, development, and reproduction. It also manages stress responses and regulates mood.
Reproductive endocrinologists undergo years of extensive training to specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of reproductive, fertility, and hormonal disorders in both men and women.
To become an OB/GYN, one must complete four years of medical school followed by four years of an obstetrics and gynecology residency. To become an REI, one must then complete an additional three-year fellowship focused on infertility, reproductive hormones, advanced reproductive technologies (ART) such as egg freezing and in vitro fertilization (IVF), and research.
REIs provide comprehensive care for many complex issues, including infertility, fertility preservation, hormonal imbalances, and more.
Why Would I See a Reproductive Endocrinologist?
Reproductive endocrinologists can diagnose and treat a wide range of hormonal, fertility, and reproductive health disorders in both men and women.
People may turn to reproductive endocrinologists if they are having trouble conceiving, experiencing recurrent miscarriages, dealing with irregular or absent periods, or suffering from reproductive system-related pain. People also see endocrinologists for thyroid issues, hormonal issues such as polycystic ovary syndrome, and fertility preservation.
As experts in assisted reproductive technology (ART) and fertility preservation, REIs can help you plan for the future — whether you’re considering fertility testing, treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF), freezing eggs, sperm, or embryos, preparing for cancer treatment that may impact fertility, or exploring family-building options as an LGBTQ+ individual or couple.
Some of the most common hormone and reproductive-related conditions and issues treated by REI include:
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Premature ovarian failure (POF)
Amenorrhea, the absence of menstruation
Endometriosis
Infertility in men and women
Pregnancy loss, including recurrent miscarriages
Menopause
Premature ovarian insufficiency (premature menopause)
Uterine fibroids
Thyroiditis (thyroid inflammation)
Irregular or unusually painful periods
Sexual function problems
Whether you’re currently experiencing symptoms or starting to explore family planning for the future, consulting with an REI as soon as possible will help ensure you get the expert guidance you need.
