Exploring Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): Is It Right for You?

Posted on July 4, 2025

Every person's fertility journey is unique. Some conceive quickly, while others may take longer or need fertility treatments such as intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization (IVF), or surrogacy. IUI is a common fertility treatment recommended by reproductive specialists for couples having difficulty conceiving, as it's a less invasive and lower-cost alternative to IVF. If you're experiencing infertility, it's important to understand what IUI is, how it works, and how a reputable fertility clinic can help you grow the family of your dreams.

The IUI Process

The goal of IUI is to improve the chances of fertilization by increasing the number of healthy sperm that reach the fallopian tubes during a woman’s most fertile period. The IUI process begins with an initial consultation with a fertility specialist, who will review both partners’ medical histories (if applicable) and family-building goals. They'll also order diagnostic tests to help guide the treatment process. Sperm for IUI treatment can either come from a male partner or a donor.

If the provider determines that IUI is the appropriate next step, they'll start monitoring the female partner and her menstrual cycle. In many cases, medication will be prescribed to stimulate ovulation, and the patient will be monitored to identify her ovulation window using either ultrasound or home urine testing.

During the IUI procedure, the fertility specialist will insert a speculum to view the cervix. This sensation is similar to that of a routine Pap smear. During the procedure, a small tube will be inserted to place a concentrated semen sample directly into the uterus. This process usually takes only a few minutes and is generally painless. Some women may experience mild cramping during the procedure and light spotting for one to two days afterward. However, most patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately after the procedure. Two weeks later, the patient will take a pregnancy test to determine whether conception has occurred.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IUI?

A fertility specialist may recommend IUI for:

  • Couples experiencing infertility due to a medical condition, such as endometriosis or low sperm count

  • Couples with unexplained infertility

  • LGBTQ+ couples

  • Aspiring single parents

IUI Success Rates

IUI is considered a safe and effective fertility treatment for individuals or couples wishing to become parents. Generally, the younger the person or couple is at the time of the IUI procedure, the greater their chances of achieving pregnancy. It may take several cycles of IUI to achieve a successful pregnancy. If a patient has more than six unsuccessful IUI cycles, a fertility specialist may recommend transitioning to IVF.
